About Daniel

A University of North Texas-trained percussionist (UNT) with a B.Mus in Jazz Studies (Drum Set), and a minor in Music Theory, Daniel Pennell is an educator and performer with a passion for music in our communities, especially among our youth, active supporter of the West Vancouver Youth Band, and annual staff at Con Brio Whistler and Sun Peaks Festivals (Canada).

Daniel’s experience in education and performance spans most genres and band-sizes. As a performer, he has shared the stage with musicians including Duduka Da Fonseca, Zachary Stevenson and Renee Rosnes and is a DownBeat Student Music Awards recipient. Based in Parksville on Vancouver Island, Daniel performs with the newly formed Oceanside Big Band.

As an educator, Daniel actively works with musicians in a range of settings, from private lessons to small groups and ensembles. Recently, a primary focus has been on authoring drum set and orchestral percussion curriculum for teachers and students, as well as full ensemble resources for Jazz and Concert bands. Daniel is continuously inspired by a strong network of friends and professionals, UNT’s College of Music resources, the Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM), and guidance from notable past and current mentors including Douglas Macaulay, Don Reed (d. 2005), Ed Soph, Billy Cobham, Paul Leim, Lyle Mays, Antonio Sanchez, Nasheet Waits, Eric Harland, Rufus Reid, Eddie Gomez, Lynn Seaton, and Stefan Karlsson.

With a focus on musicianship, excellence, drums, percussion, and stage performance, Daniel works with musicians young and old to develop both technical ability and confidence in performance settings.
